The Many Forms of VIDEO GIRL AI (1989-2018)

When manga-ka Masakazu Katsura penned a one-shot of VIDEO GIRL AI in 1989, perhaps no one knew how large the franchise would grow to become over the following decades. Katsura then serialized VIDEO GIRL AI from 1990-1992. During this run, a live-action film known simply as VIDEO GIRL AI (1991) was directed by Ryu Kaneda, and an OVA known as VIDEO GIRL AI (1992) was directed by Mizuho Nishikubo. A light novel written by Sukehiro Tomita followed in 1993, and then the franchise fell into obscurity for fifteen years. In the late 2010s, Den'ei Shōjo ~Video Girl Ai 2018~ (2018) was aired by TV Tokyo. Directed by Kazuaki Seki, the 2018 live-action series updated the setting of the franchise, retelling the story of Video Girl Ai for a modern generation. A follow-up, Den'ei Shōjo ~Video Girl Mai 2019~ (2019) was released the following year with the same director. (As of this video's recording, this final entry had not been released, and as such is not covered here.) Today we look at VIDEO GIRL AI in almost every one of these incarnations and examine the similarities and differences between them. --- Citations: https://cinemanippon.wordpress.com/20...
