Second Italo-Ethiopian War | 1935–1936 Explained
The Italian invasion of Ethiopia, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, occurred between 1935 and 1936. Italy, led by Benito Mussolini, sought to expand its colonial empire in Africa by conquering Ethiopia, one of the few remaining independent African nations. Tensions between Italy and Ethiopia escalated in 1934 after a skirmish at the Walwal oasis on their border. Italy used this incident as a pretext for invasion. In October 1935, Italian forces launched a full-scale invasion equipped with modern weapons such as tanks, aircraft, and poison gas. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie mobilized his people to resist the Italian invasion. Ethiopians engaged in guerrilla warfare and battles against the Italian forces. Primary Source: 1. Barker, A. J. (1968). The Civilising Mission: The Italo-Ethiopian War 1935–6. London: Cassell.
