Rato Machhindranath Bhoto Jatra | Bungamati | 2082 |
Bhoto Jatra is the climactic and most iconic event of the Rato Machhindranath Jatra, one of Nepal’s oldest and most important cultural festivals. Celebrated annually in Jawalakhel, Lalitpur, Bhoto Jatra literally means “vest festival,” and is renowned for the ceremonial display of a jewel-studded black vest (bhoto) from all four sides of the towering Rato Machhindranath chariot. The origins of this ritual are rooted in Newar mythology. According to legend, a farmer was gifted a precious vest by the serpent king Karkotaka Naga as a token of gratitude for curing his wife’s illness with a special herbal remedy. However, the vest was later lost and eventually seen being worn by someone else during the festival. When a dispute broke out over the rightful ownership, it was decided that the vest would be kept by the deity Rato Machhindranath until the true owner could claim it with proof. Since then, the vest has been displayed every year during Bhoto Jatra in a symbolic gesture, keeping the myth alive. The event takes place after the Rato Machhindranath chariot, a massive 32-foot-high structure built with traditional wooden craftsmanship, completes its journey through various historic neighborhoods of Patan, such as Pulchowk, Gabahal, Mangalbazaar, Lagankhel, and Kumaripati. On the day of Bhoto Jatra, thousands of devotees and spectators gather at Jawalakhel to witness the vest display. The presence of the living goddess Kumari, government officials, and even the head of state adds national significance to the event. A priest climbs the chariot and holds up the bhoto from each side while conch shells are blown and traditional music is played, invoking both reverence and excitement. The festival is not only a religious observance but also a vibrant celebration of Nepal’s living heritage. It reflects the deep cultural integration of Hinduism and Buddhism within the Newar community, as both faiths revere Rato Machhindranath—seen as an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara by Buddhists and a rain-bringing deity by Hindus. Bhoto Jatra also marks the conclusion of the deity’s six-month stay in Patan. After the ceremony, the image of Rato Machhindranath is returned to its temple in Bungamati, where it remains for the next half-year. This cyclical movement between Patan and Bungamati signifies the connection between the divine and the agrarian life of the people, who believe that the deity’s blessings ensure timely monsoon rains and a good harvest. Thus, Bhoto Jatra is not just a religious festival—it is a powerful expression of Kathmandu Valley’s ancient traditions, communal unity, and enduring reverence for nature and divine protection.
