স্যার সলিমুল্লাহ এতিমখানার ইতিহাস ঐতিহ্য সম্পর্কে।
In 1909, Nawab Sir Salimullah established the Salimullah Orphanage in Dhaka, which was initially known as the Islamia Orphanage. It was established in a rented house at Kumartuli near Ahsan Manzil. Sir Salimullah donated a monthly grant of Rs. 200 to run the orphanage. In 1912, a committee was formed to run the orphanage. As the number of orphans increased, it was shifted to Azimpur near Lalbagh Fort in 1913. In 1913, the Governor of Bengal, Lord Carmichael (1912-1971), visited the orphanage and provided Rs. 1000 (one thousand) for its operation. He also allotted a government plot of land near the Shaheed Mosque in Amlapara Gore for the construction of the orphanage building. Most of the expenses were borne by Khwaja Salimullah. After his death, the management of the orphanage faced a huge financial crisis. In such a situation, many local residents of Dhaka city opened the door to financial support and renamed the orphanage Salimullah Orphanage. Lord Carmichael laid the foundation stone of the Nawab Habibullah ward during his visit to the orphanage in 1916. When the orphanage again faced financial crisis in 1923, the management committee was reconstituted with Nawab Habibullah and Chowdhury Farid Uddin Ahmed Siddiqui as the chairman and secretary respectively to overcome the crisis. In 1926, Lord Lyton (1922-1927) during his courtesy visit to the orphanage donated 2500 (two and a half thousand) rupees. He inaugurated the factory department to provide technical education to the orphans. The foundation stone of the extended building of the orphanage was laid during the visit of Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury in the same year. In 1931, Lady Jackson, wife of the then Governor of Bengal, Sir Stanley Jackson, visited the orphanage and inaugurated a building called Sir Ahsanullah Ward, built at a cost of 22,853 (twenty-two thousand eight hundred and fifty-three) rupees. Nawab Ali Chowdhury donated 10,000 (ten thousand) rupees for the purpose. The then Education Minister, Khwaja Nazimuddin, managed the remaining expenditure from the government treasury. Lady Jackson unveiled the plaque of a new building called Zenana Mahal (Women's Ward) built at a cost of 23,175 (twenty-three thousand one hundred and seventy-five) rupees. Out of this amount, Khwaja Salahuddin donated 10,000 (ten thousand) rupees and the remaining amount was spent from the government treasury. Later, Zenana Mahal was renamed as Nawab Begum Asmat-un-Nesa Ward. In the same year, a weaving department was inaugurated in an extended ward. In 1932, an initiative was taken for the development of the orphanage. Sufficient funds were collected and a new building was constructed and machinery and equipment were purchased for training the orphans. Teachers were appointed to conduct vocational training courses related to tailoring, blacksmithing, weaving, masonry, government service and gardening. After completing these trainings, many students studied at Ahsanullah Engineering School and Sri Rampur Weaving School. The orphanage is run by donations from both the government and private sectors as a registered organization under the Social Welfare Department. The number of members of the Board of Directors of the orphanage is 15. In 2003, the Chairman of the Management Committee entered into an agreement with Concord for the construction of a building on the orphanage land. The agreement would harm the orphanage, which led to conflict within the Management Committee. On 2 January 2008, the government abolished the Management Committee and converted the orphanage into an institution under the Department of Social Services. Four students filed a writ petition in the High Court against the corruption of the Management Committee. In 2013, the human rights organization Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh joined the High Court in a writ petition filed on behalf of four students of the orphanage, and on September 17, 2015, the writ petition ordered the confiscation of the Concord building and its transfer to the orphanage. Later, when Concord appealed, the appeal verdict ordered the transfer of the 18-story building built by Concord to the orphanage. On August 31, 2022, the administration transferred it to Sir Salimullah Muslim Orphanage. #Azimpur #Dhaka #azimpur #SirSalimullahOrphanage
