Cuban singer Seidy La Niña returned to Cuba after nearly seven years away, with a stopover in the Dominican Republic. The reunion was within her family: her elderly grandmother awaited her at home, and the artist confessed that the trip was bittersweet because her grandfather, who always greeted her at the door, passed away during her absence. Unlike other artists, the singer has not stayed in hotels owned by the dictatorship nor promoted tourism for the regime: she has remained in the humble neighborhoods where her family lives, amidst the ongoing blackouts of more than 24 hours that plague ordinary Cubans. However, there is one detail that could complicate matters for her: the private tours she allegedly booked during her stay are reportedly linked to HAVANATUR, an agency of the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR), an entity sanctioned by the United States on July 13th along with nine other organizations of the Castro regime. Paying in dollars to an entity on the SDN List could expose any US resident to an OFAC fine upon their return. During the show, he was also directly challenged: to use his presence on the island to join a cacerolazo (pot-banging protest) and set the Cuban freedom movement to music, as in that song with which he debuted, singing about a free Cuba. The case reopens a debate that divides the exile community: can one return to a Cuba under dictatorship without unwittingly contributing to the machinery that oppresses the people? WHAT DO YOU THINK?
