Giovanni "Nanni" Moretti (Brunico, August 19, 1953) is an Italian film director, actor, producer, and screenwriter. His works are characterized by the irony and sarcasm with which he addresses commonplaces and the problems of youth, and by his sharp social criticism. He was born in Brunico (province of Bolzano), where his parents were vacationing. He spent his childhood in Rome, and from adolescence, he began to cultivate his two great passions: water polo and film. Mario Monicelli (Rome, May 16, 1915 – Rome, November 29, 2010) was an Italian film director and screenwriter, considered one of the masters of Commedia all'italiana ("Italian Comedy"). Monicelli was born in Rome, the youngest son of the Mantuan journalist Tomaso Monicelli. His older brother, Giorgio Monicelli, worked as a writer and translator. He attended the local high school and entered the world of cinema through his friendship with Giacomo Forzano, son of the playwright Giovacchino Forzano, who had been commissioned by Mussolini to establish film studios in Tirrenia. Monicelli lived a liberal youth, and many of the jokes in Amici miei (My Friends) were based on his own experiences. He made his first short film in 1934 with his friend Alberto Mondadori. This was followed by a silent film, I ragazzi della via Paal (The Boys of Via Paal), which won an award at the Venice International Film Festival. His first feature film was Pioggia d'estate (Summer Rain) (1937). Between 1939 and 1942, Monicelli wrote numerous screenplays (approximately forty) and worked as an assistant director. Monicelli made his official directorial debut in 1949 with the film Totò cerca casa (Totò Looks Home), co-directed by Stefano Vanzina. From the outset, their filmmaking style proved to be particularly fluid. Vanzina and Monicelli successfully directed eight more films in four years, including Guards and Robbers and Totò in Color. From 1953 onward, Monicelli worked alone, while continuing to write screenplays.
