Mornings in the Philippines in the mid-to-late 1990s were defined by ABS-CBN's TV breakfast show "Alas Singko Y Medya", which livened up the Filipino family's start of the day with its mix of news, infotainment, and live features. Launched in 1996 with hosts Julius Babao and Panjee Gonzales, it eventually grew into a barkada of segment anchors with Christine Bersola (who replaced Panjee), Cheryl Cosim, Mon Ilagan, Aida Gonzales, Ronald Estella, Mike Cohen, Ira Panganiban, Jeff Fernando, Zenaida Seva, and others. Young pop star Jolina Magdangal (now dubbed the Queen of Philippine Pop Culture) was tapped to sing the iconic morning show's catchy theme song.
