When Oda Nobunaga was killed by Akechi Mitsuhide, his ally, Tokugawa Ieyasu, was staying in Sakai with only about thirty retinues. Kyoto was under Akechi's command, and the roads were being hunted for defeated warriors. In a desperate situation, Ieyasu chose a three-day escape across the treacherous mountains of Iga—the so-called "Divine Lord's Iga Crossing."
