His boxing journey commenced in his youth when he began training at Jimmy Egan's gym, competing in 74 amateur fights, and becoming a national championship finalist. While the plan was always to turn professional with Egan’s, unexpected injuries postponed this transition. However, this setback led Joe to undergo necessary surgery, resulting in him entering the professional arena with two "bionic shoulders," he explained.
