[Ecole et religion en Alsace Moselle]

February 9, 2004 Report from an elementary school in Alsace-Moselle, where religious education is offered to all students, as in all public schools in the region. A commentary on images of catechism classes alternates with interviews with Serge BREISTROFFER, catechist, Jean-Pierre SCHMITT, school inspector, Isabelle TRABAND, FCPE (Prompter of the French Federation of Teachers), and Sister Léocadie. [Source: France 2 prompter] The law on religious symbols in schools is to be adopted tomorrow in its first reading by the National Assembly. One part of France remains separate: Alsace and Moselle. There, there is no separation of church and state since the region was once part of Germany. Religious education is part of the curriculum; it is the state that is responsible for it.
