Many people are happy harmonising a melodic line but often are less happy harmonising starting with a bass line. This music composition lesson begins with a bass line and considers the best way to select chords to fit it. He then demonstrates how to write a melodic top line that fits with the harmony, that acts well alongside the bass line, and also works well as a melody. We consider the shape and direction of the melody along with the balance between conjunct and disjunct movement and the rhythmic character that can be achieved.
