The Complete Cost of Living in Guanacaste Costa Rica--Housing, Food, Healthcare, and Everything Else

If you have been trying to figure out what it actually costs to live in Guanacaste Costa Rica, you have probably run into content that is either outdated, vague, or built around a lifestyle that does not match what a couple in their late fifties or sixties is actually looking for. This video is built differently. I walk through every major cost category for a couple living comfortably in Guanacaste, with real current figures for 2025, and I build a complete monthly budget from the ground up rather than giving you a range so wide it tells you nothing. Housing covers both renting and owning across gated and non-gated options, with specific figures for the main expat areas including Tamarindo, Playas del Coco, Flamingo, and the Potrero corridor. Food covers both local market shopping and the imported and specialty items most expats continue to buy, plus a realistic dining out budget for a couple who enjoys eating out regularly. Utilities covers electricity with the air conditioning variable explained clearly, water, internet, and phone. Healthcare covers private insurance for a couple in their late fifties and early sixties, out-of-pocket clinic costs, dental, and the long-term picture once legal residency opens access to the Caja public system. Transportation covers vehicle ownership costs in Costa Rica including the import duty reality, fuel, maintenance, and insurance. Entertainment covers the activities, dining, and social life that make Guanacaste worth living in rather than just affordable. I also cover the costs that consistently get left out of cost of living calculations: travel home to visit family, regional exploration, property maintenance reserves, and professional costs for accounting and legal. These belong in a real budget and leaving them out produces a number that falls apart once you are actually living here. The complete monthly budget I build comes to 4,680 dollars for a comfortable renting couple, dropping to 3,300 to 3,500 for a couple who owns their home outright. I compare those figures directly to average retired couple spending in the United States and Canada, and I cover the property equity angle for buyers who are considering deploying home equity from a high cost-of-living North American market into a Guanacaste property purchase.
