On 18 August 1988, the body of Pakistan's president, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, landed at Islamabad Airport. Having seized power in a military coup in 1977, General Zia dominated Pakistani politics for over a decade before being killed on 17 August 1988, when the military transport plane in which he was travelling crashed shortly after take off from Bahawalpur Airport. His body was returned to Islamabad International Airport the following day and was received by state officials and mourners including the late president's son, Ijaz-ul-Haq.
