RAF CASPS Historic Interview | Sir John Grandy
DON'T FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE! ------------------------------------------------------------------- This year, to commemorate the ‘Few’ who fought in the Battle of Britain, the RAF Centre for Air and Space Power Studies is proud to present, Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Grandy GCB GCVO KBE DSO KStJ in conversation with Group Captain (later Air Vice-Marshal) Marten Van Der Veen. The interview was filmed at the RAF Staff College, Bracknell, in June 1988. Sir John Grandy’s career spanned from the early Thirties to the latter days of the RAF’s involvement with the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent and should therefore be of interest to many air power scholars and enthusiasts alike. Grandy joined the RAF in 1931 on probation before qualifying as a pilot on biplanes. During the Battle of Britain he commanded 249 Squadron, flying Hurricanes from RAF Church Fenton. Despite being shot down and severely wounded in September 1940, Grandy continued his leadership of the squadron from his hospital bed: his example of courage and duty must have had its intended effect as 249 Squadron became the most successful RAF squadron of the Battle. The setback of his hospitalisation was soon overcome and Grandy went on to a long and distinguished career. During the War his command tours included RAF Duxford and 210 Group, and after the War he went on to command RAF Germany, Bomber Command and Far East Command before eventually being appointed Chief of the Air Staff in 1967. From the Battle of Britain to the UK's Nuclear Deterrent, here is Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Grandy GCB GCVO KBE DSO KStJ. FIND US AT...
