She Dined With Stalin, Collected Fabergé Eggs, and Made Presidents Come to Her: Marjorie Post
In 1914, a 27 year old woman inherited the Postum Cereal Company and a fortune worth $20 million. She turned it into General Foods with a $22 million gamble on frozen food in 1929, built the 115 room Mar-a-Lago for $7 million, and spent the purge years of 1937 buying Fabergé treasures in Stalin's Moscow. By her death in 1973 she was worth an estimated $250 million, and the most powerful people in Washington still came to her table. But the company she owned outright would not even let her sit on its own board. In this video, we talk about C.W. Post's cereal empire in Battle Creek, the inheritance that made a 27 year old the richest woman in America, the boardroom that locked out its own controlling shareholder, the strategic marriage to E.F. Hutton, the frozen goose that led to the Birdseye acquisition and the birth of General Foods, the construction of Mar-a-Lago, the Sea Cloud yacht, the divorce that won her a board seat, the Davies marriage and the Moscow embassy during Stalin's purges, the Soviet sales of Romanov treasures, the Hillwood salon that ruled Washington society, her Depression era canteen and wartime gifts, and the museum and presidential retreat she left behind.
