The Austerity Program is a noise rock and alternative metal band that formed in New York City in 1997, founded by guitarist Justin Foley and bassist Thad Calabrese. The band has a distinct sound; due to their use of a drum machine The Austerity Program took their previous penchant for obsessive micromanagement to (let’s really hope) as far as they can take it with Bible Songs 2. Yes, it’s recorded and pressed with ridiculous audiophile quality; yes, there’s some esoteric music-theory thing that’s happening across the songs; yes, the whole this is (again) written around some of the worst stuff in the Good Book. Oh, it’s all there if you want to dig for it. We just expect people to wonder why, after nearly three decades of playing together, this band is at their most unfriendly and caustic. Sure, the opener “Lamentations 4:7–11” takes its time to tie and firmly secure the noose before the floor drops. But the alarm anti-riff opening “Judges 19:22–29” signals where the rest of the record is going: retribution, punishment, damnation where the hammer of the gods a pounding drum machine. It may have taken them five years to write a song that channels the book of Revelation, but they did it. You’re not going to hear another record like Bible Songs 2 this (or any other) year, probably because most folks don’t seek out panic-prophecy for their entertainment.
