What's the secret behind the luminous water in Ivan Aivazovsky's paintings? Most people think the magic of his legendary seascapes lies in special blue paints or secret pigments. But the truth is, in the very beginning, there wasn't a drop of blue on his canvases. The great marine artist began his masterpieces... with gray. In this series, I challenge myself and replicate Aivazovsky's unique method using his intimate masterpiece, "Off the Coast of Yalta on a Moonlit Night" (1852), as an example. In the first part, we'll completely abandon color and reveal the painting's "skeleton." You'll see how the grisaille technique works, how to create a flawless tonal underpainting with just two paints and lay the foundation for the future mystical moonlight.
