The era of autonomous cargo trucks, where cargo is loaded without human labor and the vehicle operates without a driver, is just around the corner. Starting this month, autonomous cargo trucks carrying goods have begun commercial operations on domestic highways. Reporter Lee Seul-gi visited the site. [Report] Turning on the autonomous driving switch, [I will proceed (in autonomous driving)."] As soon as the driver takes their hands off the steering wheel, the 25-ton heavy truck begins to move on its own. Even in severe weather with pouring rain, it drives stably along its lane. It also automatically detects unexpected hazards. ["The vehicle on the side has its wheels right across the line."] This is the autonomous cargo truck that began driving on the highway carrying actual cargo on the 1st. It travels a distance of 116 km three times a week, departing from Gunsan Port in North Jeolla Province, passing through Jeonju, and ending in Daejeon. What makes autonomous driving possible are the cameras and sensors installed throughout the vehicle. As autonomous driving becomes more advanced, people will no longer sit in the driver's seat; instead, a person will only be present in the passenger seat where I am sitting right now. By the year after next, fully autonomous driving will begin, where even the passenger seat is occupied by no one. It is predicted that 24-hour operation will shorten delivery times and reduce labor costs, thereby lowering overall expenses. Also, because it maintains a constant speed, it is slightly more fuel-efficient..."] Freight transportation is undergoing a fundamental transformation, with unmanned robots being deployed in processes such as loading and unloading cargo that previously had to be done manually. However, the possibility of technical errors such as hacking, issues regarding liability in the event of accidents, and job cuts for truck drivers remain challenges that need to be addressed.
