Rising cost of living, rising homelessness, rising crime, rising migration levels and lower standards of living and opportunities are current hot topics. Many Brits are unhappy with the direction the country is heading. Some have felt so concerned by the state of the nation that they have left to start a new life elsewhere. One of those emigrants is Lewis, who invited me to his recently adopted home of Amsterdam. Lewis wanted me to come and check out his own neighbourhood, Bijlmermeer or 'The Bijlmer' as it is locally known. He thought it would be really interesting for me to compare this area, which is known as the notorious 'roughest hood' in Amsterdam, with similar areas back in the UK. The Bijlmer has a fearsome reputation as a Dutch Ghetto due to high crime and social issues to be found in the huge and intimidating government housing blocks. I have visited the touristic centre of Amsterdam before, but I had no idea of the reputation of its infamous social housing district. Home to a high percentage of migrants and ethnic minorities, is the reputation of The Bijlmer as an infamous 'no-go zone' justified? Furthermore, how does this notorious district of the Netherlands compare to similar areas in the UK? #amsterdam #bijlmer #netherlands #britain #dangerous #crime #interviews
