Czesław Miłosz. Poet, Nobel Prize winner, exile, witness to the twentieth century. In this episode of the "Stories of Authors" series, Stanisław Wiśniewiecki tells the full, over-an-hour-long life story of one of Poland's greatest writers, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1980. The film takes the viewer on a journey from Szetejnie, Lithuania, where Miłosz was born into a noble family, through a turbulent childhood marked by revolution and war, his teenage years in Vilnius, full of romances and poetic debuts, to the dramatic experiences of the occupation in Warsaw. We meet Miłosz as a member of the Żagary poetry group and author of the catastrophic "Three Winters," as a witness to the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto, and as the author of one of the most moving poems in Polish literature, "A Poor Christian Looks at the Ghetto." We follow his diplomatic service in communist Poland, his internal conflict between loyalty and freedom, his escape to the West, and the creation of The Captive Mind, one of the most important texts of the twentieth century on the mechanisms of totalitarianism. The film details his more than twenty-year period in exile, first in Paris, where he wrote The Issa Valley and A Treatise on Poetry, and then in California, where Miłosz taught at the University of California, Berkeley, writing in Polish for a readership his books could not reach. We discuss the circumstances of his Nobel Prize award, its impact on the reception of Miłosz's work in Poland and internationally, and the price the poet paid for his international success. A separate layer of the film is Miłosz's private life, his numerous affairs, his relationship with his first wife, Janina, her Alzheimer's disease and death, and finally his great, late love for Carol, whom he called Karolina, their marriage, their years together in Krakow, and his wife's tragic death in 2002. The film also explores the poet's personal tragedy, related to the mental illness of his younger son, Piotr, and the religious dimension of Miłosz's work, who undertook to translate the Holy Scriptures, following in the tradition of Kochanowski and Karpiński. This is not a dry biography. It is the story of a man who, for ninety-three years, built a dam against despair, transforming the experience of history, love, and loss into the substance of verse. It is the story of a poet who, until the last moments of his life, dictated from a hospital bed, wanting to help others cross the threshold he himself feared.
