Best Camping San Francisco Bay. Camping on San Francisco's Angel Island #sanfrancisco #justdoit
Angel Island is the largest natural island in the San Francisco Bay and a terrific place in the San Francisco Bay Area to camp. The island offers some of the best views of San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge. The normally wind swept island is accessible by ferry from San Francisco or Tiburon. The best place to park is Tiburon because its easy, inexpensive and who wants to leave their car overnight in San Francisco. Tiburon has several ferry parking lots a short walk away from the pier and Lot A the farthest away or about 8 minute walk is only $5 for overnight campers. Hey its a back pack trip. The cost of the ferry round trip is $28 although clipper, seniors, and kids area about half of that. The cost of camping on Angel Island was $38 and its normally difficult to get reservations but on this trip no one else was in my campground. I stayed in the Sunrise site which as the name implies has brilliant sunrises. A benefit of the eastern facing campsites is less wind making it over mount Livermore which is the 780 foot peak in the middle of the island. You can get to the East Bay and Sunrise camp sites on the Perimeter road trail or the North Ridge Trail from the ferry pier at Ayalo cove. North Ridge has more trees and scenic that way. There is a couple hundred foot elevation gain and the distance is about 2 miles. There is a small concession stand the Ayalo cove that was open from 10 - 3. It was only offering drinks and snacks during my trip due to storm damage. There is a tram that can give a tour on the perimeter road trail. Angel Island is known for historic buildings from the civil war and as Ellis Island of the West but that deserves a completely separate video. Angel Island offers impressive solitude and nature for being within view of San Francisco. Some lessons learned, sure. Don't try strapping so much to the outside of pack. Use a compression sack for the sleeping bag and unpack and pack a few times before the trip. The bivy bag is 3FUL Gear Tyvek Bag Cover liner - waterproof type b. $23 from Amazon. #californiaadventure #californiacamping #angelisland #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscocamping #thatplace #alone #backpacking #sanfranciscobay
