But when demands are placed on him, he can lose his temper. His parents and support services are overwhelmed. Fifteen-year-old Emilia and five-year-old Lion also exhibit similar behavior. Recent research provides a neurological explanation for this extreme avoidance of demands. The syndrome is called PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance). Whether it is related to autism spectrum disorder is controversial. PDA is still poorly understood in German-speaking countries. Estimates suggest that only a small number of children are affected by PDA. However, the consequences for families and their environment are all the more serious.
