Freed from strict religious duties, Bach focused on instrumental music and produced these six suites that remain a cornerstone of cello repertoire. Each suite follows a six-movement structure: Prelude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, two Galanteries (Minuet, Bourrée, or Gavotte), and Gigue. Though based on dance forms of the time, Bach infused these movements with deep musical architecture and inner spirituality. The suites were largely neglected until the late 19th century, when 13-year-old Pablo Casals discovered a forgotten edition in a second-hand shop. His daily practice and eventual recordings (beginning in 1936) revived the works and redefined their artistic value. French cellist Pierre Fournier adopted these suites early in his career. His 1972 complete recording, released by Deutsche Grammophon, is widely considered a classic interpretation. Marked by clarity, restraint, and structural elegance, it avoids excess while embracing the soul of Bach’s music.
