The Kelly Bag gets a pampering treatment to restore its shine. The "handbag of handbags"—that's the legendary Kelly Bag by Hermès. The model was named after actress Grace Kelly, who married into the royal family and became Princess of Monaco. The handbag was designed in the 1930s by Robert Dumas. To this day, it is considered the epitome of timeless elegance. Each bag is meticulously handcrafted and represents the highest level of leather craftsmanship and tradition. This particular example, however, was not in particularly good condition. Signs of wear, stains, and torn sides clearly indicated that the bag had a long history. The appraiser initially estimated its value at 2,000 to 3,000 euros, but it actually fetched 3,200 euros. To restore its value and appeal, it's being professionally restored by leather and bag designer Maren Dessel from Cologne. First, she carefully treats the straps with stain remover spray. The key and lock are cleaned with baking soda and then polished with a silver polishing cloth. The biggest challenge is the torn sides. This requires particularly precise work. The edges are also sanded and touched up with black paint. Crucially, the leather must retain its natural patina, as this is precisely what gives the bag its unique character.
