Why is this a separate specialization? The temporomandibular joint is one of the most complex in the body. It is connected to the regulation, spine and nervous system. When something is wrong with it - one head, neck, back and even mood 💚 Every day we activate the mandibular joint more than 2000 times: talking, smiling, borrowing, chewing. The lower jaw moves forward, backward, sideways, diagonally - dozens of muscles and two joints are involved at the same time, and everything should work synchronously 💚 When should you visit a #gnathologist? Chronic headache - especially in the morning, in the temples, which does not go away after taking painkillers and intensifies after a long conversation. The reason is a spasm of overloaded chewing muscles. Ear pain without obvious ENT pathology - congestion, ringing, noise, feeling of fluid in the ear. If the ENT confirmed that the ears are healthy, the problem may be in the TMJ and you should look for a #gnathologist specialist 💚 Limited mouth opening - pain when opening wide, yawning, sneezing or a feeling that the jaw is "jammed". Clicking and crunching during jaw movements is not a #dental problem, but a reason to look for a gnathologist 💚 Erasing #teeth - the front #teeth have become shorter, their edges are even, yellowish dentin is visible on the chewing teeth. This is a sign of bruxism or an incorrect bite. Fillings and crowns on worn #teeth without eliminating the cause are a waste of money 💚 #Gnathologist in a team with a #dentist 💚 Often the need for #gnathology is detected by the #dentist. A typical situation: the #dental crown is installed technically correctly, but the patient complains of discomfort. The doctor grinds, lowers - and a week later the neighboring #teeth interfere. The problem is not in the #dental crown, but because the biomechanics of the #dental jaw have not been taken into account. #Gnathologist analyzes the movement of the gaps, the contact points of #teeth and the distribution of the load before prosthetics 💚 With a complex malocclusion in adults, the #orthodontist works in tandem with the gnathologist: the first corrects the position of the #teeth, the second monitors the work of the joints and muscles 💚 How to undergo treatment with a #gnathologist specialist? 70% of success is diagnostics: #bite analysis, computer or magnetic resonance imaging of the joints. This may take 2–3 visits, but the same accurate diagnosis guarantees the result. There is no universal recipe - treatment is always individual. Treatment methods include medications, physiotherapy, massage, jaw exercises, consultation with a psychotherapist (for #bruxism), #orthodontic treatment, partial grinding of #teeth (only 0.1–0.2 mm is removed - the #tooth is untreated). #Surgery is extremely weak 💚 The duration of treatment at a #gnathologist is from several weeks to several years: muscles have memory, heavy ones need adaptation, and the nervous system must form new movement patterns 💚 How to protect yourself from jaw problems? Control stress and learn to relax. Use #teeth only for eating - do not gnaw on foreign objects. Chew evenly on both sides. Do not support your chin with your hands. Chew sugar-free gum for no longer than 5 minutes. Treat sick #teeth in a timely manner. Watch your posture.
