We Created 12 Months of Content in ONE Shoot | The Debrief Episode 40
In this episode of The Debrief, we break down two very different—but equally insightful—virtual production projects: a high-volume social media shoot for a play therapy practice, and a cinematic Unreal Engine auditorium set for speaker Dean Sikes. First, we walk through how we helped a client from Play Therapy Nashville create an entire year’s worth of social media content in a single day. From shooting vertical video to optimizing wardrobe over location changes, this project challenged our workflow in ways that exposed both strengths and gaps in our system. We also dive into how we captured and reused a real-world location as a digital “plate,” and how small details like scale, perspective, and wardrobe made a massive difference in the final result. We also talk honestly about the reality of vertical video—why it can be frustrating from a filmmaking standpoint, and how we adapt to it to meet client needs. Along the way, we share practical insights into lighting setups, camera strategies for social content, and why wardrobe can often matter more than the background itself. Then, we shift gears into a completely different project: building a cinematic auditorium environment using Unreal Engine for speaker Dean Sikes. Instead of filming in a real venue with uncontrolled lighting, we recreated the experience in a controlled environment—allowing us to shape the mood, lighting, and tone with intention. This portion of the episode dives into: • The challenges of matching scale between real life and Unreal • How lighting design impacts realism in virtual environments • Why small details, like textures and set dressing, matter more than expected • The advantages and limitations of using Unreal Engine compared to real-world locations We also touch on the collaborative process with clients—from scripting and teleprompter work to helping people feel confident on camera—and how those human elements are just as important as the technical side. Whether you’re a filmmaker, content creator, or exploring virtual production, this episode is packed with practical lessons, honest insights, and real-world experience from the field. Key Topics: • Virtual Production Workflow • Shooting Vertical Content for Social Media • Plate Shooting and Background Replacement • Unreal Engine for Film Production • Lighting for Realism • Wardrobe and Visual Cohesion • Client Collaboration and On-Camera Coaching If you enjoyed this, consider liking, subscribing, and sharing with someone interested in filmmaking or virtual production.
