'CyberReaper Showdown' -Recording session at Air Studios (Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality)

Footage from the recording sessions for Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality at Air Studios in London. Near the end of the game, The Doctor confronts the CyberReaper and this cue underscores writer Gavin Collinson's brilliant dialogue between the two. I mention in my Making The Music videos that underscore (music underneath dialogue and other, subtler music cues) is often done badly with a persistent, unchanging pad sound or rhythmic loop which just has the effect of flattening the drama. It's very common at the moment in TV and film and makes any alternative approach stand out for the better. A far better option is to either step out entirely and have no music for the scene, or to score the dialogue or narrative as closely as you would an action scene. Follow the beats - follow the changes in emotion, tone, acknowledge the balance of power, the changes in expression and energy etc. It's a much more difficult and time-consuming way to do it, but I much prefer writing something with a bit of harmonic and melodic interest and weaving it in and out of the scene.
