My Seditious Heart – An Evening with Arundhati Roy - Live at ISF+
Arundhati Roy catapulted to international fame when her first novel The God of Small Things, won the Booker Prize in 1997. For the two decades that followed, Roy devoted herself to the political essay, using her global platform to open up spaces for justice, rights and freedoms in an increasingly hostile environment. Radical and readable, they speak always in defense of the collective, of the individual, and of the land, in the face of the destructive logic of financial, social, religious, military, and governmental elites. In constant conversation with the themes and settings of her novels, the essays form a near-unbroken memoir of Arundhati Roy’s journey as a writer and a citizen, of both India and the world. Roy’s work, marked by compassion, clarity and courage, only becomes more relevant with time. Arundhati Roy was in conversation with David Barsamian, host of Alternative Radio and one of the world’s most respected investigative journalists. Barsamian has co-authored books with Arundhati Roy as well as with the likes of Edward Said, Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Event Presenting Partner: SFU Library In association with Penguin Random House Community Partners: Hari Sharma Foundation and The Vancouver Writers Festival __________________________________________________________________________ To all of us at Indian Summer, the festival really is a model for the kind of society we’d like to see. A society that is creative, diverse, inclusive and innovative. As the world builds more and more walls and as societies get suspicious and afraid of people who don’t look like them and think like them, we believe in the transformative power of the arts and the festival is our way of reaffirming these beliefs.
