Vodcast #1 “Responsible mining in Europe”: Anders Sand is interviewed by Peter Tom Jones

In this first episode of a series of in-depth interviews with leading voices in Europe, Dr. Peter Tom Jones (Director KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals) searches for answers to Europe’s seemingly problematic relationship with primary mining of energy-transition metals. In this 17-minute interview with Anders Sand, who is the R&D manager of the EU-based mining & refining company Boliden Mines – which has been described as a “climate leader” by the Financial Times – the following topics are covered: What entails socially and environmentally responsible mining? Which rehabilitation plans are needed to transition to such a new mining paradigm? Why does the Not-In-My-Backyard-Syndrome (NIMBY) seem to be less pervasive in the North of Scandinavia compared to the rest of Europe? Documentary “Responsible Mining in Europe” This vodcast is closely linked to the (22-minute) EU NEMO/HE ENICON documentary on “Responsible Mining in Europe: A new paradigm to counter climate change”, which investigates how a socially and environmentally responsible mining paradigm can come to fruition in Europe. The documentary comprises spectacular footage of Europe's vanguard mining industry with key attention for social, environmental and waste management practices. Leading experts in the field (incl. Anders Sand (Boliden), Maria Nyberg (European Commission), Thomas Lapauw (ResourceFull), Liesbeth (VITO), Gwen (BRGM)) share their views on how Europe can boost its critical raw materials independency, which will be key for implementing Europe’s ambitious climate strategy.
