I doubt any other Brazilian creator has done this before me. It all begins with a nearly 40-minute motorbike ride on dirt roads through dense jungle, near an active volcano. Then comes the hiking trail, the boat trip across the lake, and finally the village of Trunyan, in the north of the island, with extremely difficult access and practically no conventional tourism. What exists there is a unique Hindu ritual: the dead are not buried. The bodies are placed outdoors, under a sacred tree called Taru Menyan. And believe it or not: the smell doesn't spread. The village smells normal. There's something supernatural about it, and science hasn't fully explained it yet. When I arrived, I saw skulls, bones, and decomposing bodies exposed. The energy of the place is incredibly heavy. I confess I was genuinely scared on the way: a stranger picked me up on his motorbike along steep roads in the middle of the forest, without GPS, without internet, with no one waiting for me. If something went wrong there, no one would know. Besides the ritual, the video shows the extreme poverty of the road to Trunyan: malnourished dogs, accumulated garbage, children playing in the mud, houses with no structure whatsoever. An invisible reality even within Bali, an island known worldwide as paradise.
