Mid-century modern generally refers to a design movement that started in the 1940s and peaked in the 1950s and 1960s. Pop culture references include Don’t Worry Darling, The Big Lebowski, Mad Men, Hairspray, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The postwar period was a time of great change as the aftermath of WW 2 brought political, economic, social, and technological developments, which were reflected in art and architecture. The need for affordable housing and furnishings combined with a desire for efficiency, functionality, and practicality resulted in a new era for architecture and design. In this video, I’ll cover the characteristics of Mid-Century Modern design, create a mood board for a Mid-Century Modern room, and show you how to get the Mid-Century Modern look on a budget as I head to the thrift store to see what kinds of mid-century treasures we can find.
