JOSEPH HAYDN - "Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae" Große Orgelsolomesse in Es-Dur Hob. XXII:4 "Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae" (Great Organ Mass in E-flat Major Hob. XXII:4) This video documents the live recording, made on 16 December 2012 at the Karlskirche in Vienna, of one of Joseph Haydn’s most notable masses. On this occasion, the Great Organ Mass was performed without the Gloria, as it was the Solemn Mass for the Third Sunday of Advent. It owes its name to the prominent role of the organ, particularly during the Benedictus, a movement in which it performs a solo part of concertante virtuosity. The Mass is on a grand scale and features outstanding passages in the vocal solo parts, as well as magnificent fugues and an elaborate treatment of counterpoint in general within the choral and orchestral parts. The video features images of St. Charles’s Church in Vienna, Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt, its chapel and the surrounding park, as well as images directly related to the text and, given the title of the Mass, predominantly Marian images.
