Festa della Repubblica: perché senza le donne avrebbe vinto la Monarchia
Eighty years ago, on June 2, 1946, Italian women voted for the first time. It wasn't a vote of convenience: it was a decades-long victory, costing persecution, imprisonment, and bloodshed. In this episode of Left Talk, Marina Parrulli and director Simona Maggiorelli talk with Vittoria Tola, national coordinator of the UDI (Union of Women in Italy), and Sonia Marzetti, historian and vice president of FIAP (Italian Federation of Partisan Associations), to tell the true story of that democratic victory. Women's suffrage also means resistance. Nearly a million more women than men voted for the Republic in 1946: without them, the Monarchy would have prevailed. Founding Mothers like Nilde Iotti, Teresa Noce, and Lina Merlin wrote the Constitution, but the journey began long before: from the suffragists of the 19th century to Anna Kuliscioff, from the women against the First World War to the strikes of 1943-1944 in the Mirafiori, Breda, and Alfa Romeo factories. Resistance and anti-fascism are at the heart of this episode. Ada Gobetti, Carla Capponi, Marisa Rodano, and Lidia Menapace: figures who fought in the Women's Defense Groups, as couriers, Gappists, and freedom volunteers. The fascist regime had driven women back home with the motto "God, country, family," erasing the gains of the First World War. The Liberation was also their revolution. Women's rights today: between setbacks and new challenges. From the disempowered equality advisors to the debate on consensus, from women's working conditions to the role of the right in government, the guests reflect on what remains of that achievement and what remains to be defended. An essential episode for those who want to understand where we came from and where we can still go. 📚 BOOKS AND PUBLICATIONS CITED "From the vote denied to women to the vote won by women" edited by Rita De Petra, with contributions by Vittoria Tola and Gabriella Milea (Left) "Bitter Sex" by Vittoria Tola (UDI/Left) Volume on Lidia Menapace edited by Rita De Petra (Left) "Fascism and Neo-Fascism" by Andrea Maestri and Carlo Boldrini (Left) "The Crime of Crimes.
