Built across the Godavari River near Polavaram in Eluru district, the project aims to transform agriculture, improve water security, generate hydroelectric power, and support the state's long-term economic development. Once completed, the project is designed to provide irrigation to around 2.91 lakh hectares (about 7.2 lakh acres), supply drinking water to millions of people, generate 960 MW of hydroelectric power, and transfer 80 TMC of Godavari water to the Krishna basin. It is expected to benefit farmers across several districts by ensuring a more reliable supply of water for agriculture. Despite its importance, the project has experienced delays over the years due to engineering challenges, funding issues, rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced families, environmental clearances, and changes in project execution.
