Free → https://pilotdebrief.com/pattern Two days after Christmas in 2016, a non-instrument-rated pilot launched a Cessna 182H from Florida toward Gatlinburg with two family members on board — straight into a forecast wall of mountain obscuration he never bothered to brief. The pilot departed Keystone Heights, Florida, on December 26, 2016, bound for Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport with two family members aboard. He had no instrument rating, no weather briefing, and no flight plan. An AIRMET for mountain obscuration was in effect along the route, and satellite imagery showed IFR conditions with cloud tops between 6,000 and 7,000 feet over the Smokies. As the Cessna approached the destination, ATC cleared a descent from 9,500 feet on flight following, with explicit instructions to maintain VFR. Instead, the airplane settled into a steady-state descent through a solid cloud layer, tracking north toward the airport. Radar showed no deviation, no climb, no turn — just a straight line into terrain he could no longer see. The wreckage was found at 5,400 feet on steep terrain, abeam the 6,500-foot peak of Mt. LeConte, about 15 miles short of the runway. There were no pre-impact mechanical anomalies. All three on board were killed. The NTSB found the pilot's intentional VFR flight into IMC resulted in controlled flight into terrain, with his established anti-authority attitude cited as a contributing factor. This was not a single bad decision on a holiday morning. A flight instructor had counseled the pilot numerous times over two years about flying in IMC without an instrument rating — and he kept doing it. The airplane was two months overdue for its annual.
