The Autonomy Paradox: Challenges of Pediatric Training in Today’s Complex Clinical Learning Environment Presented by: Maggie Robinson, MD, MAEd Assistant Professor, Pediatric Critical Care Associate Program Director of Evaluation and Assessment, Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship UCSF Department of Pediatrics Meaningful autonomy is at the heart of medical training, but the complexity of today’s clinical environment makes it harder than ever to provide. How can we strike the right balance between supervision and independence to help our trainees develop confidence and ownership To explore this question, we welcomed Maggie Robinson, MD, MAEd, who completed both her pediatric residency and pediatric critical care fellowship training at UCSF. Dr. Robinson is currently pursuing a PhD in health professions education, and her research on autonomy and supervision in medical education has been presented at PAS and the AAMC Learn Serve Lead conference. Dr. Robinson examines the current factors shaping resident voice, decision-making, and patient care ownership — and explores practical strategies for more active trainee involvement while maintaining appropriate supervision. Join us for a timely discussion on how we can create stronger training experiences for the next generation of pediatric clinicians. Learning Objectives: •Describe the meaning and role of autonomy in current medical education and pediatric residency training. •Identify factors within today’s clinical learning environment that influence resident voice, decision-making, and patient care ownership. •Discuss strategies to promote meaningful resident involvement while balancing supervision and patient safety.
