When the two parties reached an agreement in 1395 and ceased hostilities, numerous Vitalian Brothers simply continued their activities, attacking – more or less indiscriminately – any merchant ships they could find in the Baltic and North Seas. This prompted the Hanseatic cities to have warships escort their merchant ships. One name, however, repeatedly appeared in the complaints: Klaus Störtebeker. Soon, the hunter became the hunted, and his options for retreat became increasingly limited. Then the pirate makes a crucial mistake...
