What they call "Pandora's box" was never a box. And what escaped from it wasn't what you think either. In this episode, we revisit the original story of Pandora, according to Hesiod, in the 8th century BC. A very different version from the one that has become popular: the first woman of the Greek world wasn't a curious woman who ruined humanity. She was an instrument designed by Zeus as punishment, given to men by divine command, and trapped forever within a myth that blamed her for suffering that was already decreed. We also explore the origin of the word "hope" (Elpis), why the Greeks spoke of a vessel (pithos) and not a box, and when the confusion arose from a mistranslation by Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1508.
