Lantern Mantles Demystified

Loads of people ask about which mantle they should be using for their lantern or lamp. If you're like most people the first mantles you'll use were made by Coleman. In this video I talk about the different mantles Coleman makes (or has made in the case of the #20) and which is appropriate for what lantern. In general you can usually start with a #21 mantle for testing on a new lantern. The cases where this won't work are on a Northstar lantern which wants a double tie #95 and on the small 51xx series propane lanterns. Many single mantle lanterns really want a larger #99 mantle which will also fit on the common 200A lantern. I think the bigger mantle looks kind of goofy in the 200A although I do use in a 249 which I think benefits from the larger size, it still looks kind of goofy though. Canadians got the 335 and 321 both of which are a bit larger than the 200A and really should have a #99. The #11 or #111 is for the large 500cp lanterns like the 236/237, they'll also work on 500cp Petromax lanterns and their clones Be very careful when handling mantles, wash your hands afterward and be sure not to breath the fumes when burning them off before use.
