It’s a clean cut community surrounded by corn fields about an hour east of Omaha, Nebraska. If you didn’t know about it, it would be hard to miss. Over the last years, the number of people who live here has been going down at a steady number. Some years, 40 folks leave town. Some years 100 people do. It’s all for the same reasons - kids want more exciting things to do, and there aren’t a lot of white collar jobs out this way. As we’ll see, Red Oak might be shrinking, but not because it’s not great here. If you look around the town square, you’ll see a lot of construction going on. Lots of the store fronts are getting fixed up, and there are new leases in the works. Above the storefronts, there are new apartments and condos springing up. There’s a lot of opportunity here for small businesses and families who want a cheaper, safer life. I drove around Iowa for an entire week and stopped in every small town I came to. I have to say - you could do a lot worse for a small town in Iowa. Many of the small towns I saw looked stagnant.
