It connects the nation’s capital with Australia’s largest city, serves several growing regional centres, and covers a distance where rail can be highly competitive. So ten: why does the train still take such a long time, run only a few times per day, and struggle to compete with driving, buses and flights? In this video, we look at the problems holding the Sydney to Canberra rail line back, as well as the major upgrades that are now being planned. From track improvements and level crossing upgrades, to new trains and additional services, a series of relatively modest investments could dramatically improve one of Australia’s most important regional rail corridors.
