SPERMIDINA
SPERMIDINE Spermidine is a biogenic polyamine present in all our cells. It is synthesized from putrescine and serves as a precursor to spermine. Therefore, spermidine is essentially a reaction intermediate between these two molecules. Several foods, such as wheat germ (243 mg/kg), soybeans (207 mg/kg), rice bran, and peas, contain high concentrations of spermidine. SPERMIDINE BENEFITS To date, the benefits of spermidine are largely unknown. Two prospective studies have shown that spermidine supplementation in the human population can potentially reduce mortality related to cardiovascular and cancer diseases. There is also other potential clinical evidence showing that spermidine supplementation may be beneficial in the elderly population, particularly in Alzheimer's patients. Spermidine may, in fact, improve memory performance and reduce cognitive decline. SPERMIDINE SUPPLEMENT The concentration of spermidine in the blood tends to decrease with age, so supplementation can certainly be potentially helpful; however, no recommended daily doses have been established, nor have specific physiological effects been established. Commercial spermidine supplements provide approximately 1.2 mg to 3 mg of spermidine per day. SPERMIDINE CONTRAINDICATIONS From a toxicological standpoint, spermidine is well tolerated and generally causes no side effects. However, since there is no significant scientific literature, it is always important to exercise caution and report any side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
