Jane Austen's Uncomfortable Realism About Illegitimacy

Henry Fielding's Tom Jones gives us an illegitimate hero who overcomes the disadvantages of birth, discovers his true origins, inherits, and gets a happy ending. Jane Austen admired Fielding. So why did she make such different choices? In this video, we look at Austen's illegitimate characters Harriet Smith in Emma, Eliza Williams in Sense and Sensibility, and the elder Eliza whose tragic story shapes Colonel Brandon's life. Unlike Tom Jones, these characters rarely become the center of the narrative. They rarely receive triumph, recognition, or rescue. But that absence may be Austen's argument. Rather than imagining a world where virtue overcomes social barriers, Austen often focuses on how those barriers shape real lives. Her illegitimate characters are not forgotten by the narrative. They are placed at its edges, where readers are forced to confront the consequences of a society built on birth, inheritance, and reputation. Was Austen criticizing the system? Accepting it? Or doing something more complicated than either? Let me know in the comments: Do you read Austen's treatment of illegitimate characters as compassionate, conservative, realistic, or all three at once? #review #netflix #movie #film #janeausten #books #reading #emma #senseandsensibility ------------------------------------------ This video is for commentary, criticism, and educational purposes under Fair Use (Section 107 of the Copyright Act).
