This Building Shouldn’t Still Be Here

The structure at Mack and Holcomb was built in 1920 as a branch of Central Savings Bank and designed by famed Detroit architect Louis Kamper, known for the Book Cadillac, Book Tower, and David Broderick Tower, among others. Larger than most neighborhood banks, it featured multiple office spaces with separate entrances along Holcomb Street. Over time, it housed a range of tenants before Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church moved into the building in the 1960s. This stretch of Mack Avenue was once dense with activity, but disinvestment and population shifts left much of it empty. Despite that, the church has remained active here for decades, preserving one of the last remaining structures on this part of Mack.
