Macau refugee problem in 1958

55 jaar geleden werd Macau overstroomd door refugees from the mailland who fled for 'the terror resulting from Mao Zedong's 'leap forward' policy. Every month more than a thousand Chinese entered the Poirtugese colony. Some by swimming. Many lost their lives. Seen in this film are those who made it. Amongst them the blind. Western charity institutions tried to help as well as the Macau government. By 1966 there were 80.000 refugees in Macau. The commentary of this little known 16mm film is spoken in French. From what I understand the commentary does not give much more than what one sees. My apologies for not translating it. See also my other clips on old Macau, which I visited first in 1952.
