Elvis Presley - Make Me Know It - From first Take to the Master
Regardless of it’s merits a song overall, “Make Me Know It” was destined for it’s own special place in Elvis’ musical legacy. This was assured from the moment that it was the very first song recorded at his first post army recording session. This session took place at RCA’s Studio B in Nashville on 20 March 1960 and yielded six masters. These were achieved over eleven hours between 8pm on 20 March and concluded at 7am the following morning. The songs recorded at this session contributed towards the self-explanatory titled album “Elvis Is Back”. However, the six songs, which included “Stuck on You” and “Fame and Fortune” was not enough material for a full album and so additional sessions were scheduled for 3 April 1960. “Make Me Know It” was concluded after nineteen takes, of which only five were complete takes. Continuity was maintained with the exact same studio line up from his final pre army session assembled minus Hank Garland. Although it was apparent from the off that Elvis’ musical style had evolved in his time in National Service there is no doubt that vocally Elvis had never sounded better.
