What went on behind the scenes of Alien 3 is almost beyond belief in its absurdity. Ten screenwriters and three directors worked on the project for years. And when a man was finally found to take on this mess (David Fincher), a tug-of-war began between 20th Century Fox and the filmmakers. There are countless plot holes, many characters are less developed than coffee in a youth hostel, and not a single decision in this film seems to have any real impact. There's the argument that Alien 3 deliberately pursues a nihilistic approach, with characters dying without much exposition or dramatic death scenes. And the film undoubtedly succeeds at this in parts – but for me, far too much sameness crept in far too often. Even those willing to give Alien 3 a chance will very quickly face the mammoth task of keeping track of confusing chase scenes and characters who all look exactly the same due to their bald heads. But it's not just the plot of Alien 3 that's a patchwork; the tone also suffers from completely absurd outliers: when rock music blares during Ripley's attempted rape, then in the next scene sacred choirs underpin the endless religious prattle of the space cult, and then an inmate comments on the gruesome death of a guard with the unintentionally comical exclamation "Fuck" – at that point, even the most oblivious viewer will wish an alien would bite their head off. I respect the color grading and overall look of Alien 3. David Fincher creates a cohesive atmosphere with it: the washed-out grays reflect the bleakness of the abandoned, dirty planet. The sets are also impressive, as is the alien itself… except for the puppet, which has aged terribly. Sigourney Weaver is completely convincing. However, she also had the advantage of her character already having been in two films, which fleshed him out with life and backstory. The rest of the cast has to make do with the crumbs thrown to them by the unfinished, cobbled-together script. As a standalone film, Alien 3 might have received more attention, but as it is, it remains in the shadow of its two fantastic predecessors. Certainly, the production of Alien 3 was fraught with conflict and problems, but at the end of the day, I'm judging the final product, and it's not convincing. I give the Assembly Cut 5.5 out of 10 and the theatrical version 4.5 out of 10. ...
