Building Canada’s Forgotten U-Boat Hunter — 1/72 Douglas Digby Mk.I Bolo

Today I’m building the 1/72 scale Douglas Digby Mk.I “Bolo in Canadian Service,” a rare and unusual World War II aircraft used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Based on the American Douglas B-18A Bolo and developed from the DC-2 airliner, the Digby served with No. 10 Squadron RCAF on anti-submarine patrols during the early Battle of the Atlantic. Although outdated by the time World War II began, the Digby helped fill a critical gap in Canada’s coastal defense. RCAF Digbys carried out multiple U-boat attacks, including the confirmed sinking of U-520 on October 30, 1942. This build looks at the aircraft, the kit, and the history behind one of Canada’s lesser-known wartime patrol bombers.
