Judge, Lawyers Argue Over 2018 Porsche Speeding Stop w/ Young Thug

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville often sides with prosecutors in the Young Thug / YSL trial, but the prosecution took an L today when the judge blocked their attempts to tell the jury about a 2018 traffic stop involving Young Thug, who was driving a Porsche and, prosecutors say, being followed by an SUV that had guns inside, including an AK-47. The argument over whether to allow it occurred Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, and it included Glanville snapping at the young D.A. who looks like he is a college kid. The incident is overt act 75 of 191 that prosecutors say supports the RICO conspiracy charge. The indictment reads: "Defendant Jeffery Williams, an associate of YSL, was the subject of a traffic stop for speeding, involved in the stop were two vehicles, one being driven by Williams, and another - a Dodge Charger - closely following Williams containing four individuals who were warmed with numerous weapons with high-capacity magazines to include an AK-47 with a 30-round magazine, an overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy.” One of the cops who pulled Thug over was David Fikes, who testified about a September 2017 traffic stop involving Gunna, Young Thug and Cedric Jones. The prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Christian Adkins, questioned him thoroughly about the stop (that's when we saw the photos from the stop, including Thug in his "Fear of God" shirt), and he wanted to continue the exam by asking Fikes about the 2018 stop. But as you see here, he ran into problems with Judge Glanville, who said he can't bring it up, at least not yet. One of Adkins' arguments that the 2018 is relevant to the alleged RICO conspiracy (which alleges Thugger runs his YSL record label as a criminal street gang) is Young Thug's lyric in "Eww," "In the Bentley on West Lee gettin' trailed by sniper." That and other "Eww" lyrics comprise overt act 9. He reads their names at 12:40, then mentions the "Eww" lyrics. "These two cars were rolling in tandem together." 13:45 "All of the overt acts, none of them are looked at in isolation." 15:10 "Just because two cars are traveling down the road at the same time doens't necessarily make them tied to one another," Judge Glanville says. "Other than the fact that they're traveling together." 22:34 More argument from Wednesday (Jan. 31). The prosecutor is concerned because Adams wants to mention the 2018 stop in his cross. Not all the details like the D.A. does as an overt act. But Adams says at 25:10 Fikes had a conversation with the other officer in which "he specifically tells him to mute his body cam." He think it's relevant to the testimony about the 2017 incident and should be mentioned by itself, without the other stuff that the D.A. wants to get in about the stop. "That to us goes to the credibility of Officer Fikes." Fikes also tells the other cop that he should up Thug's charges to reckless driving instead of speeding. 26:10 Glanville says he agrees Adams can ask about the incidents, but he cautions Adams that his questions could open the door for more about the 2018 incident. 28:15 D.A. argues Fikes' entire interaction in 2018 is relevant, but Glanville disagrees. 34:10 "We covered this yesterday. It doesn't have a nexus. Stop trying to get into it. I'm still not convinced," Judge Glanville snaps. Notable: After all that, Adams didn't end up questioning Fikes about the 2018 statements about the body cam and reckless driving charges, probably because he was worried about opening the door for prosecutors to bring in the entire alleged overt act that Glanville is so far excluding.
