Keir Starmer has announced he is resigning as Prime Minister after Labour MPs turned on him and forced him into a summer leadership contest. In an emotional statement outside Downing Street, he said he accepted the verdict of his party “with good grace” and would step aside so a new leader could be installed by September 1. His exit follows months of scandals, sackings and rebellion inside Labour, with Andy Burnham now the favourite to replace him. The resignation plunges Britain into yet more political turmoil and opens the door to a bitter fight for control of the country.
